Thank you to all of the girls for their hard work and competitive spirit they showed while trying out for Avon Girls Travel Basketball this past week. Posted below are the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams. Congratulations to those girls who were selected to a team. For those girls who did not make a team, please consider playing with Avon Parks and Rec this Winter and continue to work on your skills.

Thank you very much to all who participated in the travel basketball tryouts over the past week at TBS. All of the kids were attentive, respectful and played hard. The decision as to who made the various teams was a difficult one. To the kids that unfortunately did not make a travel team this season, if you want to be a basketball player, do not give up. Parks and recreation is a good option to keep playing basketball and to improve your game this winter. Also know that if you keep practicing, working hard and improving, you may make a travel team next year.
To the kids who made a team, congratulations and good luck this season. To those parents, this Wednesday October 15th (schedule listed below with location for each grade), this is a mandatory meeting where we will get your son's uniform size and number preference. At this meeting, you must (1) pay the $385 fee (via check made out to ABTBA or cash), (2) bring a copy of your son's birth certificate, (3) bring a copy of one proof of residency (i.e. driver's license or utility bill with home address on it), and (4) bring a CBTBL Code of Conduct signed by each player and at least one parent (see attached). NOTE----Returning players from last year, we are not changing our uniforms style this season so if your uniform jersey and shorts from last season still fit and are in good condition, please bring them to the fitting and we will make sure they are still in good shape and there are no conflicting numbers and if so, you can re-use them this year, in which case you get a $15 credit towards your fee if you use the same jersey and $15 credit towards your fee if you use your same shorts ($30 total credit if both are being re-used).
Uniform Night - Wednesday October 15th
All Players must have: Parent code of Conduct, Medical Release, Copy of Birth Certificate, Copy of proof of residency. Please see handout section for forms. Payment of $385.00
We have received various recent questions from parents of 4th graders and other parents asking about boys travel basketball, the ABTBA, and our program. Hopefully this summary helps answer those questions. The Avon Boys Travel Basketball Association (“ABTBA”) has been in existence for well over a decade and promotes and supports competitive boys basketball teams in Avon to enhance and improve players’ skills fostering a positive environment of sportsmanship and teamwork. The ABTBA offers the opportunity for Avon Boys in the 5th through 8th grades to play at a level which encourages growth as an individual and as a team. Up to two teams of typically 10 to 12 players in each grade may be selected each year. Each grade will field one team to play in the Connecticut Boys Travel Basketball League (CBTBL) a highly competitive league composed of larger towns largely in the Greater Hartford area. A second team at each grade may also be selected when turnout and ability allows. This team will play in the NCC Travel Basketball League (NCC) which provides strong competition from smaller towns in a similar region. Criteria for player selection will include, but not be limited to: athleticism, skill, attitude, commitment and the need for team balance.
Typically, each September, the ABTBA will hold several open gyms for any boys that wish to play. Tryouts are then held in early/mid October. The ABTBA board will be available with more information at the Open Houses in early September at AMS and TBS --- look for us there. Head Coaches for teams will typically be selected by an ABTBA committee, pursuant to an interview process, after the teams have been selected each year. Assistant Coaches will be selected after players and Head Coaches have been named. All interested in Coaching must submit an application and volunteer form to the ABTBA which will be available at the Open Houses and are available on this website.
ABTBA teams will typically play approximately 20-25 games between late November and early March. Games generally will be on Saturdays and Sundays with a minimum of two practices during the week. Practices begin after teams are selected. Games and/or practices may be held during both December and February vacations.
